New Construction: Design Trends

According to Better Homes & Gardens, there are some new trends that are being seen around the country in newly constructed homes.  What do you think – does their list match up with the criteria you have in mind for your new home?

1. Nix the open kitchens.  Homes are now trending towards open floor plans with visual separation between rooms – a peninsula in the kitchen fits that purpose to a “T”.

2. Mix and match cabinetry.  Break up a wide expanse of cabinetry by painting the island a different color.

3. Breakfast nooks. This casual space will be used everyday, from eating breakfast to doing homework.

4. Oversized islands. Who couldn’t use more counter space?

5. Formal dining rooms.  Again, the trend is snapping back a bit from completely open floor plans – and the formal dining room is back.

6. Wood floors. The days of miles of carpet in the living areas is over, and everything from hand-scraped hardwoods to traditional 2 1/4 inch oak is in.

7. Energy-efficient windows.  With heating and cooling bills through the roof, builders know that energy efficiency is the way to go.

8. Spa-like bathrooms. A separate bathtub and shower is a luxurious trend.

9. No more two-story living spaces.  Two-story rooms aren’t energy efficient or cozy – a higher-than-average ceiling has a wow factor while still being practical.

10. Formal living room not important.  Builders are opting for designated home offices rather than formal living rooms, recognizing how the modern family actually lives in their home.

11. All-in-one media, storage & fireplace.  This all-in-one feature packs a big punch and creates a great focal point.

12. Specialty spaces.  Every square foot in a home is precious, so maximizing each space is important.

13. Partial walls. Half walls are a great way to differentiate between living areas while still allowing the space to feel open.

14. Outdoor rooms.  Families today like to treat the backyard as an extension of their homes, so outdoor kitchens and living areas are important features.

15. Traditional exteriors.  Homes that appear “mainstream” are easier to market and sell.
